If there is a rule in painting its there are no rules.
You never stop learning.
Learning can be fun. I’ve learnt what can work to make painting more fun. One of them is drawing.
Drawing is important in painting and sculpture, etc.
Artists have drawn to plan a painting since painting began.
Drawing is usually the foundation of painting, whether the painting works or doesn’t.
If a house is strong or falls its due to its foundation, so to can a painting work or not by it’s drawing.
Drawing enables you to make many versions of an idea. You are then able to pick the most successful drawing and make it a painting.
It’s easier to alter a drawing (all thats needed is a pencil and rubber) than a painting.
Drawing is a plan. Like a list of what you need at the shops. Writing the list, settles your mind relaxing you, helping you think clearly.
Having a plan is usually the best way not to get stuck later on. If you do get stuck you can always do a drawing of the painting to resolve it.
Using a pencil on paper is adventurous and limiting. Adventurous, as you are more free to make mistakes and limiting as you do not need to put colour into the equation. Drawing and composition go together. As drawing involves lines, the composition of the drawing, the lines are what makes up the composition.
The drawing can be successful, worth pursuing as a painting or not.
The shape of the picture can be altered along the way to what suits. Borders of the drawing can be lengthened or shortened to what works best.
Examples of drawings and for the paintings they become are below.
With the initial drawing for Swimming Pool the roof line top and below have been taken away in the finished painting. With the idea that the roof lines weren’t necessary, as it enclosed the subject.

Sketch for Sunset Drinks
Sunset Drinks Amed Bali
The story behind this painting is that Nina and I had arrived in Amed in Bali that day. I was feeling stressed as on the way to Amed I did something adventurous and stupid. I tried to eat a cashew nut from a tree. Don’t ever do this! They are related to poison ivy and have a toxin in them that is removed from the nut by steaming.
Nina arrived where we were staying before sunset as a passenger on a motorcycle with another motorcycle and driver and said to get on the back with the other driver. We survived the ride to order a meal and drinks to watch the sunset at the table in the painting.
I’d had a photo of the subject for the painting “Placing the Towel” for many years. It wasn’t until doing a drawing of it, l was able to work out how it would make a good painting.
Initial Sketch for Placing the Towel
Finished sketch for Placing the Towel
In the initial drawing, the towels shadow was cut off creating tension in the composition. In the altered drawing you able to add the towels shadow to the drawing balancing the composition, enabling a successful painting.
